Title: Wishing On Dandelions Author: Mary E. DeMuth Publisher: NavPress ISBN: 1-57683-953-2 Genre: Inspirational/Fiction
Mara has changed her name to Maranatha, needing to know that she’s not ‘bitter,’ but as Maranatha means, “Come, Lord Jesus” which implies hope. She’s still recovering from the horror of her past, but now her beloved uncle has suffered a stroke and his personality has changed dramatically.
When Maranatha’s friendship with a colored boy is threatened because of their race and the towns prejudicism, and her uncle’s caregiver has announced that she is marrying Uncle Zane in two weeks. When Maranatha asks God if He loves her, she finds an engraved wedding ring which seems to confirm God’s love, but then a tornado blows away everything dear to Maranatha—including the ring.
Like every teenager, Maranatha is struggling to sort out her life. But soon the darkness of her history threatens. Will Maranatha ever be able to move beyond the pain of the past?
Wishing On Dandelions is the sequel to Watching the Tree Limbs and readers might want to read that book before Wishing On Dandelions first so they know Maranatha’s story. Wishing On Dandelions is not as difficult to read as Watching the Tree Limbs but it is still heart-wrenching in spots.
Maranatha is realistic, and struggles with real issues. Any abuse victim will be able to identify with Maranatha and her thought processes. I felt sorry for her and for her friends as Maranatha’s life circumstances changed, effecting more than one family in the area. Fans of Mary E. DeMuth’s previous novel will not want to miss Wishing On Dandelions. Discussion questions and an author interview are included at the rear of the book. $12.99. 356 pages.
