Title: Wisdom's Prize Author: Patricia DeGroot Publisher: Avalon ISBN: 0-8034-9746-6
Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Romance Meredith Wilde doesn't like Michael Wisdom, the stern newcomer to town, but his eight-year-old daughter, Caroline, is another thing. Meredith objects to Mr. Wisdom keeping his daughter home from school and isolated on their ranch. As the town's school teacher, it's her job to make sure the girl has an education.
But educating the town's children is getting harder because there's no money for school supplies or coal to warm the schoolhouse. When Elias Burton, a member of the school board, insinuates that if Meredith were to have dinner with him and accept his advances he might find the money she needs, Meredith is livid. How dare he! She'll just have to find the money herself.
Michael Wisdom knows Miss Wilde is right concerning his daughter, but he can't bear to let Caroline out of his sight. After a devastating loss, his daughter is all he has, and he's determined to protect her. But the fiery red-headed teacher has snagged his attention and interest. Can he keep his daughter safe and still protect his own heart?
Wisdom's Prize is a quick-paced, heart tugging romance about a hurting single father and a lonely teacher with a big heart. The conflict between the two is intriguing and keeps the reader quickly turning the pages. Almost from the beginning sparks fly, but neither Meredith or Michael want to admit to their attraction to the other. Caroline is a cute kid and almost steals the show. Author Patricia DeGroot does an expert job tying in the characters from her previous books with Meredith and Michael's story.
