Title: The Winds of Sonoma Author: Nikki Arana Publisher: Revell Books ISBN: 0-8007-3048-8 Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary/Romance
Lawyer, Angelica Amante has just been handed her dream job on a silver platter. And all she has to do is compromise her values. When Angelica stands up for her beliefs, she is fired. When she is unable to find another law job in New York, she is forced to return home to her parents in California, where she learns the family’s ranch is heavily mortgaged and might be lost.
Antonio Perez left Mexico to work in the United States and support his starving family. His father came to the states earlier, but never sent money home, so now his mother is sending him. Antonio manages to survive when the “coyote’s” truck breaks down, while most of the other Mexicans on-board perished in the desert. And now he lands a job doing back-breaking labor on a ranch.
Angelica feels pity for Antonio, being forced to work hard for low wages. She is determined to help Antonio get ahead, by teaching him English, and helping him get better clothes. But then she learns that Antonio is an illegal alien – and when she is offered a job as a public defender, she has to sign a paper stating she has no illegal aliens working for her . . . what can she do? And how can she help save her family’s home?
The Winds of Sonoma is an adorable story, made even better by the knowledge that it is heavily based on the author’s true life story. It does start out extremely slow, making me wonder if the book would be any good, but as I continued reading, I grew to care for the characters and couldn’t wait to see what happens. I had to applaud Angelica for standing up for what’s right, even though it seems everyone is against her. Antonio is a loveable hero. The faith message is expertly woven in, and not preachy.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Winds of Sonoma and read it through in a day. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to read Nikki Arana’s second book in the series. The Winds of Sonoma is a wonderful debut novel by a talented author. $12.99. 336 pages. |
