Geneva Patterson has been an outcast all her life. She believed herself to be plain, and so didn’t bother to dress in the preferred manner for young ladies, instead wearing her deceased father’s overalls and a grimy shirt. Still, she couldn’t help dreaming of more when she meets the handsome sea captain, Caleb Phelps.

Caleb has gone through some hardships, including his own father accusing him of a shameful crime. Now Caleb has broken up with his fiancée, and left Boston, moving instead to the small community of Haven’s End, hoping the small town will be more accepting of him.

Haven’s End isn’t as accepting as Caleb might like and soon his only friend in town is the strange woman, Geneva, who lives next door. Geneva helps him put in his garden, and in exchange, he offers to teach her how to read. Will the two find a friendship of sorts—and possibly more?

I had the privilege of reading Wild Rose when it first came out in 2004, and enjoyed it just as much the second time through. Wild Rose is a beautifully written romance set in the late 1800s on the rugged seacoast of Maine. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and the hurting yet loveable characters who struggled to find acceptance in the community they lived in.

Fans of historical fiction will not want to miss this re-print of Ms. Morren’s book, WILD ROSE.  $6.99. 376 pages.
