Paul Farid is an Arab-born Christian who is working as a missionary pilot to the people in war-torn Sudan. He has just delivered a load of grain and medical supplies to a remote village when he is notified that the leader in the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army insists on seeing him. Paul knows this could mean the end of his life . . .

When a missionary’s child dies under her care, American physician Larson Kerr promises four years to the Sudanese people. She will fight tooth and nail for these people, even if it means living a nightmare.

Ben Alier is a commander in the SPLA, and he will do anything to keep his people free from the government terrorizing the nation. When his little sister, Rachel, is kidnapped by slave-traders, Ben will do anything to save her.

Rachel’s safety will depend on Paul, Larson, and Ben overcoming their differences and working together to save her. But how can that happen when Paul has been shot and needs to be rescued so he can receive more advanced medical care than what Larson can provide? Will Ben and Larson be able to overcome their differences without Paul long enough to rescue Rachel?

When the Lion Roars is an exciting read. I especially liked some of the scenes where the wildlife and the setting came into play. It was fun “watching” the lions stalk their prey, the gazelles and zebras frolicking in the fields, and even the military tramping through the dense forests. This is also a timely book, considering what is happening in Sudan right now.

Ms. Mills is a talented author and brings Paul and Ben to life. I had a bit more trouble relating to Larson as she seemed a bit flat, but overall, the book is a page-turner. One can’t help but hope that Rachel will be rescued and that the Sudanese people will be free. The faith message is expertly woven in. Discussion questions are included at the rear of the book, making this book ideal for small group studies. $12.99. 320 pages.
