Title: When the Heart Cries Author: Cindy Woodsmall Publisher: Waterbrook Press ISBN: 1-4000-7292-1 Genre: Inspirational/Women/Fiction
Hannah Lapp grew up in a traditional Old Order Amish family, and outside relationships with the opposite sex are forbidden. But who can control the heart? In spite of herself, Hannah has fallen in love with Mennonite Paul Waddell. Hannah helps Paul’s grandmother with chores, and sees the handsome young man quite often. Paul asks her to marry him and she accepts, knowing her family will never approve. They agree to wait one year, giving Paul time to win over Hannah’s father. Surely he will see what a fine young man this is, and free Hannah to marry out of her faith. Paul leaves for college, and his grandmother who has agreed to deliver his letters to Hannah is not happy about the arrangement, because she knows he will never be accepted by Hannah’s father, no matter how hard he tries.
Then a terrible tragedy changes Hannah’s life forever. Forced to keep her secret from everyone, even from Paul, she has nowhere to turn, and the old ways of her people cannot answer her questions. Hannah’s family doesn’t understand the change in her. She longs to talk to Paul, but will he understand what has happened, and where is God in all of this?
Cindy Woodsmall’s When the Heart Cries grips your heartstrings in the first chapter and never lets go. Hannah Lapp, a new kind of heroine, will touch the reader with her courage and strength. Cindy had done a tremendous amount of research for this book, and she does a great job of drawing the reader into Hannah’s world.
