Title: When Crickets Cry Author: Charles Martin Publisher: WestBow Press ISBN: 1-5955-4054-7 Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary/Fiction
Reese is still in mourning. Ever since his beloved wife, Emma, died, Reese has withdrawn from civilization, choosing instead to live as a hermit in the back country of Georgia. He goes to different towns to do his shopping, so people won’t get to know him. And he has mastered the use of disguises if he must go someplace he might be recognized at.
Seven-year-old Annie Stephens is running a brisk lemonade business along the side of the road outside her aunt’s shop. She has some kind of disease, and apparently everyone in town knows what it is because they are dropping twenty dollar bills in when Annie isn’t looking. Reese is curious about the child and buys a lemonade from her. There he learns her story.
Finishing his lemonade, Reese starts off. But a gust of wind blows some of Annie’s money into the road. Annie drops everything and runs after it, never noticing the bread truck coming. Reese sees it, but too late to react. What happens next will change the life course of both Annie and Reese.
When Crickets Cry is the third book I’ve read by Charles Martin and it is written in the same heart-wrenching style as his other books, The Dead Don’t Dance, and Wrapped in Rain. The plot is wrapped in a rich, descriptive story-telling style which only adds to the poignancy of the tale. The reader will instantly identify with Reese and be tempted to pray for him as he wrestles with his wife’s passing and his insurmountable grief.
When Crickets Cry is not a book that is easily read in one sitting. I had to read portions at a time then go off and ponder what they’ve read. Still, the story is beautiful, the style impeccable. When Crickets Cry is not a story easily forgotten. I had high expectations beginning this book, and I was not disappointed. Don’t miss When Crickets Cry. $14.99. 336 pages.
