A welcome home party turns into a nightmare when returning missionaries, Blake and Melissa Thomas, become ill with hemorrhagic fever later that same evening. The two hundred party attendees are restricted to home quarantine for ten days while the Thomases are hospitalized and fighting for their lives.

Shortly after the party, Jennifer Wilson, a single mother, goes into labor and delivers twin boys. Dennis Lawton, the boys' father, shows up at the hospital, and he's furious at Jennifer for not aborting her pregnancy. He declares he wants nothing to do with the babies and tells her that she will not use the twins as a pawn to gain his family's wealth. Dennis leaves, and things go from bad to worse when the boys are whisked away to a secure sight and Jennifer is quarantined.

Dennis flees the hospital, never expecting to see Jennifer or the twins again. But when he accidentally finds out about her quarantine, Dennis feels compelled to learn what happened to the babies.

Mistaken for a volunteer, Dennis is allowed to help Flo, an older lady, care for the twins. For over a week, he learns to feed, diaper, and play with the tiny boys while Flo subtlety preaches God's Word to him. Against his will, he begins to develop feelings for the twins. But Dennis isn't cut out to be a dad. He can't wait until the quarantine is over and he can go home and forget about his sons.

When more people come down with the Fever, a crazed terrorist group attacks the hospital, shooting into the quarantined area and setting fires to several of the houses that have been quarantined. A rogue gunman forces his way into the home where the twins are being kept and Dennis faces the toughest decision of his life when the gunman tries to shoot one of the screaming babies.

Vital Signs is the third book in the Baxter series. This compelling suspense is by far my favorite. The frenetic action takes off on page one and continues with lightning speed throughout the book. There are several detailed subplots that keep the suspense at a high level and will keep you turning the page. Kathy Herman crafts a very believable tale in which Christian characters struggle with the fear of death while unbelievers are touched by their faith and strength in the midst of their fears. You won't want to miss Vital Signs, a spiritually inspiring, fast-paced thriller.
