Title: A Valley of Betrayal Author: Tricia Goyer Publisher: Moody Publishers ISBN: 0-8024-6767-9 Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Women/Fiction
Sophia Grace travels to Spain to be with Michael, an international correspondent. The meeting with Michael is different than what she expected, and war is a lot more personal than she wanted.
Phillip Stanford, a member of the American track team, is in Spain for a track meet. Phillip’s fellow team member, Attis Brody, becomes involved in the war. Phillip knows the smart thing to do is leave Spain, but that means leaving Attis, something he can’t even consider.
Ritter Agler wants to win the heart of Isanna. Knowing that she admires hero’s, Ritter welcomes the opportunity to fly a plane in the coming war. He’s looking forward to joining his comrades at the front, and dropping bombs on the enemies in Spain. Isanna will be impressed by his courage.
The Spanish Civil War pitted Spanish Republicans and their allies, the Soviet Union and the International Brigade, including many Americans, against Franco and his Fascist military and troops, machinery and weapons supplied by Hitler and Mussolini. In this war there were no clear lines between good and evil. It set neighbor against neighbor, destroyed lives and tore Spain apart. Although Tricia Goyer writes about war, she never loses sight of the people involved. Her characters are living, breathing, people who step of the page into the reader’s heart. The Valley of Betrayal is a fascinating, complex story about a little known time in the history of the world.
