When Claire Delany agrees to plan a wedding for her very busy friend, she never dreams her biggest opponent will be Pastor Brendan Flanagan. Claire has no family and Nolie is her only good friend, so she wants to give Nolie an elaborate wedding she’ll remember. Brendan is the groom’s cousin and is sure Gabe wants something simple and quiet. Right from the start, Claire and Brendan have a clash of wills.

Career-minded Claire is independent and goal-oriented. As a pastor, Brendan is also used to being in control. But for the sake of Gabe and Nolie, Claire and Brendan must call a truce.

As part of that truce, Claire agrees to help teach the troubled teens that Brendan works with skills that will enable them to get a job. One teen in particular touches Claire’s heart and make her remember things she thought she’d forgotten. Brendan’s large family of firefighters is more than willing to take Claire in as one of their own, but she feels smothered and overwhelmed. Can Claire learn to trust Brendan with her heart and her past? Will Brendan give in to his love for Claire or will his dark secret keep him from confessing his love?

Unlikely Hero is the interesting story of two stubborn people forced to work together for the sake of their friends’ wedding. Claire and Brendan butt heads from the get-go, making for some fun and interesting confrontations. Brendan finally agrees to give a little if Claire will help him with the troubled teens that he’s working with. Working with teens is the last thing she wants to do, but she agrees so that she can give Nolie a beautiful wedding.

Both Claire and Brendan have troubling pasts that threaten to keep them apart, even though they gradually begin to care for each other. Author Marta Perry does an excellent job showing the emotional struggles both characters go through as they learn to give and take. Readers will easily be able to empathize with the situations Claire and Brendan find themselves in. Love of family and learning to give your troubles to God are important issues covered in Unlikely Hero. This is a book that’s sure to give you food for thought and a warm, fuzzy feeling in the end.
