Meg St. John hoped a master's degree in landscape architecture would land her a managerial position at her old company, Sunset Landscaping. She got a job all right, but not the one she wanted.

Sunset's new CFO decided she needed a year of in-field experience before joining the managerial staff. With her year nearing the end, she's handed a huge design job that even a more experienced landscape architect would have trouble finishing on time, but she's determined to do her best and prove her worth.

Right from the start things go wrong. The border patrol keeps taking her workers, and when her boss brings a new worker, Meg can't decide if the handsome hot shot is a help or a hindrance. At least since he's fluent in Spanish he can help her communicate better with her workers. But there's just something about Jack Torres that makes her feel he's not leveling with her. Even worse, her own heart betrays her when he's near.

Border Patrol Agent Jack Torres is working undercover to track down

those responsible for his partner's murder and to stop the flow of illegal drugs, weapons, and immigrants being sneaked across the Mexican border.

Working at Sunset Landscaping is opening doors for him to get "in" with the people smuggling the immigrants. If he can figure out who El Lobo, the head honcho is, then he can finally stop the flow of illegal aliens entering the country and lay to rest his guilt over Rico's murder and return to his border patrol job.

But there's one big problem…Jack never expected to fall for his spunky boss. Can he do his job without blowing his cover or getting Meg injured—or worse? What will Meg do when she discovers he's been lying to her? And is there even a chance this side of heaven that a sweet, family-loving senorita would take a second look at a cocky, rough-edged  hombre like him?

Under Cover of Darkness is the first book in Elizabeth White's series, The Texas Gatekeepers. It is also one of the debut novels in Harlequin's new Love Inspired Suspense line. Ms. White does an excellent job creating a suspenseful story that will pull you in and not turn loose. The plot moves along at a quick pace, and problems escalate, resulting in the hero and heroine in imminent danger.

A faith subplot is deftly woven in with the suspense as Meg makes it her goal to help Jack see that church is a good, fun place to be. She introduces him to Christian believers who embrace him as he is and help him to see that God is a loving God.

Readers will be charmed with how opposites attract in Under Cover of Darkness . Meg is sweet and innocent, where Jack is tough, calculating, and has seen more of the bad in this world than a man should. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wish I could read the sequels right now instead of having to wait. Elizabeth White is definitely an author to watch. (250 pages, $4.99)
