Title: Trails of the Dime Novel Author: Terry Burns Publisher: Echelon Press ISBN: 1-59080-409-0 Genre: Inspirational/Western When Rick Dayton’s Uncle Edgar died, he left Rick a fortune—provided that Rick quit his job as a newspaper reporter and start traveling the United States writing dime novels about his experiences. So Rich hops a train and starts his quest. Deciding on the pen-name Texas Jack Hammer, he meets a delightful little girl who questions every word Rick says. While talking to the girl, two train robbers enter and Rick finds himself robbed by none-other than the infamous Jesse James. Jesse is impressed when he discovers Rick is an author and asks him to write him into his first story. Rick agrees and offers to send him a copy of the book. And so begins a series of misadventures. Rick follows his heart, and ends up on a remote island on one trip, starts a bar-room brawl on another, and works as a ranch hand on a third. He gleans plenty of material for books and learns some valuable lessons along the way. Trails of the Dime Novel is an interesting and funny read. There is really no plot, so it’s not a book a reader can figure out where it’s going. It is very well written and has several laugh-out-loud moments. While probably written for younger readers, Trails of the Dime Novel is sure to appeal to young and old alike. TRAILS OF A DIME NOVEL is the first book I’ve had the privilege of reading by Terry Burns, and I hope it won’t be the last. My twelve-year-old son is anxious to get his hands on this book and read it too. There are plenty of exciting moments to keep the pages turning. $11.99. 192 pages. | |
