Female Pinkerton agents nab their men in four interwoven novellas
“Tangled Threads”
by Carol Cox
Pinkerton Agent Ruth Hunnicut is thrilled to be in Colorado on her first
undercover assignment. Her dressmaker's shop allows the perfect cover to
meet people who may unknowingly provide vital information for her
investigation into who's been robbing local trains. Ruth takes a special
interest in Redemption Mine owner, Mark Chandler. But will Ruth's
discoveries endanger her relationship with her new friends? And is it
possible that one of her friends might actually be involved in the
robberies?
“Rescuing Sydney”
by Lisa Harris
Sydney de Clermont never expected her undercover trip to Colorado would
result in being robbed by the actual men she was sent to capture. Then, an
untimely fall from the train lands her in the arms of her brother's best
friend, John Langston. But John is the last man she wants to see, after
his betrayal of not attending her brother's funeral. Can Sydney do her job
as a Pinkerton agent and manage to keep her heart intact when John's
attentions turn romantic?
“Skirted Clues”
by DiAnn Mills
Moment Alexander is certain that the reclusive ranch owner, Brady Miller,
is hiding something. Why else would he stay on his ranch and avoid coming
to town? In order to investigate him, Moment must overcome her dreadful
fear of horses. When her horse bucks her off, she is rescued by Brady
Miller. The solemn man seems to resent her presence at first, but as she
gets to know him more, she begins to question if Brady is truly involved
in the train robberies she's investigating. Some how she must determine
the truth-no matter what it costs her.
“Victorious”
by Kathleen Y'Barbo
No one would ever expect Lady Victoria Barrett-Ames, dressed in her frilly
dresses and hats, is a Pinkerton agent. Her Pinkerton boss, Gus Drummond,
seems the hardest to convince. The stubborn man would just as soon send
her packing now that all the train robbers have been caught and the case
is closed. But Victoria is convinced that the mastermind of the train
robberies, known as The Ghost, is still at large. As she sets out to prove
her theory, some how she finds her heart divided between the town's
handsome, sophisticated banker and the Pinkerton agent who seems
determined to stop her from finishing her investigation.
I loved reading To Catch A Thief. The feisty, unconventional
heroines grabbed my interest from the very start. In spite of the
hardships and lack of support, they persevered and overcame the prejudice
of women doing a man's job in the late 1800s. The heroes are tough western
males, hacking out a life in the wilds of Colorado. Many sparks fly as
these men encounter the four citified ladies, who move beyond their
stereotype undercover jobs as store clerks and seamstresses and begin
investigating the town's recent train robberies. The bantering that passes
between some of the heroes and heroines as temperaments and wills clash,
is engaging and sometimes humorous.
The four novellas are deftly interwoven, and the characters retain their
characterization between the stories, even though each story is written by
a different author. While some anthologies have a story or two that seem
slower than the others, To Catch A Thief doesn't. Each story is
intriguing and certain to keep you turning the pages to see how each
heroine solves her mystery and catches her man.
To Catch A Thief is a delightful collection of romantic suspense
novellas that you will want to read again and again. A definite for your
keeper shelf.
