Title: Wish I’d Known You Tears Ago Author: Stephen Bly Publisher: Broadman and Holman ISBN: 0-8054-3173-X Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary/Fiction As a child, one of Develyn Worrell's favorite memories was the summer she spent in Argenta, Wyoming. Now as an adult trying to sort out her life, she's returned to the tiny town. She's made many friends, including a trio of slow-talking, heart-grabbing cowboys. When Dev's daughter, Delaney, comes to stay with her, Dev's quiet times come to a sudden halt. The troubled girl brings with her an attitude and a bagful of problems. Add to that a too-charming man who Delaney is attracted to but Dev is leery of, an Indian friend bent on marrying her beau, a burro with a mind of its own, and a special cowboy who tugs on Dev's heart, and she has her hands full. As Dev works with Cooper "Coop" Tallon to solve a mystery, she feels her heart being pulled two directions. She loves teaching school in Indiana where she lives, but knows Wyoming has claimed a section of her heart. How does she know which place is the right one for her? And can a forty-something teacher find love with a bachelor cowboy? I've heard so much about Stephen Bly's book that I was very excited when I received Wish I’d Known You Tears Ago to review. But as I began reading, I was very confused as to what was going on and who all the characters were. I felt like I walked right into the middle of a story—and discovered that I had, since this is the third book in the Horse Dreams series. I wish Mr. Bly had set the scene better so new readers to the series could understand who the characters are and what’s happening. That said, the book is interesting and the characters charming. The story is dialogue-heavy, but you hardly notice because of the engaging banter and quirky humor. Wish I’d Known You Tears Ago is the tale of a woman searching to find herself. It is also about a mother-daughter relationship and about the value of friendships. I recommend you read the other two books in this series before reading this book. Wish I’d Known You Tears Ago is a slow-paced story of a simpler lifestyle that will warm your heart and make you smile. (340 pgs. $14.99)
