All her life Corrie Grant knew nothing about her father. Now, at twenty-nine, she's learned the aunt who raised her always knew who he was—and that like her mother, her father, too, is dead. Corrie travels to Savannah, hoping to meet Trey Manning's family and learn more about the man who sired her, but she runs into one brick wall after another.

Baxter Manning, her grandfather and a wealthy businessman, thinks she's only after his money, but he does allow her to stay at his estate for a few weeks until a paternity test can be done. The other Manning heirs see her as a threat to their financial future. She tries to explain that she doesn't want Manning's money, only information about her father, but no one believes her.

Widower Lucas Santee was married to a Manning. He is in charge of Baxter Manning's vast holdings, and he's not about to let this little interloper come in and take what doesn’t belong to her. But with the Manning family so hostile, someone must protect Corrie until they determine if she really is Trey's daughter. When Corrie encounters accident after accident, Lucas can't decide if she's just clumsy or if someone is out to get her. But worst of all is that he admires her spunk and determination. If he ever thought he'd marry again, he might act on his attraction to Corrie. But he won't.

When bad things keep happening, Corrie is sure someone is out to get her. Maybe it would be best to tuck tail and run back to Wyoming, but she's not a quitter. Lucas has been her reluctant champion ever since she arrived, and she can't help that she's attracted to him. But what hope is there for them when he lives in one world and she another? Will she live long enough to convince her grandfather that she's his closest living heir?

Readers can't help sympathizing with Corrie in Tangled Memories, Marta Perry's latest book. It seems everyone is against her, and yet, she never gives up but stands firm in her mission to learn about her father. Wealthy beyond Corrie's imagination, the hostile and secretive Mannings fear she's out to get their money. No one believes she only wants information. Against all odds, Corrie perseveres. She's really a heroine to admire. Lucas is caught up in the Manning world, forced to play the hand dealt to him. Still, he does his best to shield Corrie from the Manning family and their constant ridicule.

Tangled Memories is a fascinating suspense that is sure to hold the reader's interest. Placed in historically-rich Savannah, the setting is an intricate part of the story and adds to the book's unique flavor. The secondary characters create a lot of tension and give readers plenty of red herrings to cast suspicions on. I enjoyed every bit of Tangled Memories. Marta Perry's books keep getting better and better. ($4.99, 250 pages.)
