The internet is scary sometimes—at least for Austin Webster and his new friend Drew. They jump into the World Wide Web and find themselves being chased by a tornado—and unable to find the links to get out of there! When Austin and Drew do manage to escape, they go to Language class and find that a strange substitute teacher, Mr. Z., is taking the normal teacher’s place. And later, Mr. Z. is caught trying to break into Austin’s locker, trying to steal his computer and camera!

Trying to escape from Mr. Z. and work on a report at the same time, Austin and Drew jump back into the WWW. But now they are caught in a sudden flashflood of spam! As they are swept from site to site, they desperately try to escape. They manage to contact Austin’s sister, Ashley, but Ashley is running into troubles of her own when she tries to help the boys escape. Will Austin and Drew ever get out of the WWW? And will Mr. Z. manage to erase the truth before they can?

Even though Spam Alert is book four in the Hyperlinks series, it easily stands alone. At first I had a bit of trouble getting into this book—and I understood why my twelve-year-old son handed the book to me and said he couldn’t get into it. But once I got into the story I couldn’t put it down, I had to find out what happened to Austin, Drew, and Ashley. Mr. Elmer is talented at developing realistic characters.

If your child is into surfing the web, he or she might enjoy reading Spam Alert. I think it is a good book to have in a church library or in a school library. Pick up a copy today.
