Title: Sounds of Silence (Book Two in The Texas Gatekeepers series) Author: Elizabeth White Publisher: Steeple Hill ISBN: 1-0-373-44227-0 Genre: Inspirational/Romantic/Suspense Border Patrol Agent Eli Carmichael doesn’t suspect anything unusual when he notices a shy Hispanic child hiding in the shadows at the Mexican orphanage where he volunteers his time—until he sees the bloody knife she is holding. Eli suspects the deaf mute girl has witnessed a serious crime, but she won’t communicate with him. Fearing for her life, he arranges to take her across the border into Texas. Eli knows a woman who will welcome the youngster with open arms. Widow Isabel Valenzuela is shocked when Eli asks her to temporarily care for young Mercedes, but the shy child soon charms Isabel with her quick smile and open affection. As Isabel learns to communicate with the girl, she discovers hints of Mercedes’ traumatic past. The amazing pictures the girl draws give further clues that a horrible crime was committed. But the pieces still aren’t fitting together. And what exactly is Mercedes’ part in all of it? When weird things start happening to Isabel and the children, it becomes clear that someone is after Mercedes. And if she doesn’t already have enough to deal with, Isabel is afraid she may be falling for Eli. But she married and lost one Border Patrol agent, and she can’t do it again. Will Eli be able to solve the mystery behind the bloody knife before someone he loves is hurt—or worse? Will Eli and Isabel be able to move past the roadblocks standing in the way of their feelings for each other? Sounds of Silence is the second book in Elizabeth White's compelling series, The Texas Gatekeepers. I was quickly pulled in by the riveting suspense and kept turning pages to see what would happen to little Mercedes. This poverty stricken child is at the mercy of heinous bad guys out to kill her, but her strength of spirit and desire to please Isabel keep her going. The romance between Eli, a shy, but capable Border Patrol agent, and Isabel, who lost her husband last year, is sweet and believable. It was fun seeing Eli bumble his way through a romance, and yet be a take-charge agent, fully able to defend those he loves. Ms. White does an excellent job showing the poverty and barrenness of Mexico. A faith message shows that God is always there even in your darkest hour. Though part of a series, Sounds of Silence easily stands alone. Don’t miss out on Elizabeth White’s latest exciting, fast-paced story, Sounds of Silence. (250 pages, $4.99) |
