Hannah Rose, Ahab’s widow, is happily married to David Lazarus. Timothy, her son with Ahab, is now a young man, who resembles his father in looks, but takes after his mother. He is kind, reliable, and loving, a son anyone would be proud to claim.  When Timothy stops at his father’s grave in Nantucket, he meets lovely Jemima Starbuck. Jemima’s father died when Captain Ahab’s ship was destroyed by the great white whale. Her brother, Isaiah, blames Ahab for his father’s death and believes Timothy is arrogant and evil. Like father like son.

Timothy and Isaiah are constantly thrown together, which only feeds Isaiah’s hatred. He also is furious that his enemy and Jemima are falling in love. Both Timothy and Isaiah are strong opponents of slavery. When the Civil War breaks out, both young men are changed completely by the experience.

Louise M. Gouge’s Son of Perdition is a powerful tale of love and hate, of rebellion and redemption. She does a great job of combining history with an absorbing story about characters you’ll remember long after you finish the book.
