Police officer William Jackson (Jax) Cassidy is lost and left  alone when his mother dies a slow painful death from cancer. He hadn’t wanted her to die—but now she has—leaving him with three younger adult sisters to take care of—and one very spoiled dog, Romeo.

Gwen Moss is new in town. She was brutally attacked and moved to her aunt’s vacant house in Magnolia Falls, Georgia to hopefully heal. A kind-hearted woman, she reaches out to Jax and his family, extending compassion even when she doesn’t receive it in return.

Romeo is a K-9 dropout. The police officers were hoping to use the intelligent animal for search and rescue—but anytime a woman walked by, the dog forgot what he was supposed to be doing, and would go chasing after her. He is kicked out of police academy and adopted by Jax’s family.

When Jax meets Gwen, he thinks Romeo will be the perfect dog for her. Gwen and Romeo obviously love each other—and Jax isn’t exactly an animal person. So why does he find himself missing Romeo—and Gwen—so much? Is it possible he’ll find someone to watch over him?

I found the dog’s character a bit over-the-top, but he’s a very loveable animal. I must say that Romeo’s character was probably the best developed in the whole story. I even fell in love with Romeo and wanted to pet him. Gwen and Jax are both going through a lot of pain and sorrow and that makes their characters a bit on the dark side. I’d recently experienced the death of my own mother so, for me, it made the storyline a bit hard to actually read and enjoy.

If it weren’t for the personal issues that were so similar to the book I might have found it more enjoyable than I did. If you have recently lost someone, you might want to look further, unless you want to commiserate. Otherwise, pick up Someone To Watch Over Me to read about an adorable dog—and a well-written story.
