Title: A Soldier's Heart Author: Marta Perry Publisher: Steeple Hill ISBN: 0-373-87432-4 Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary/Romance
A widow with two young children to provide for, Mary Kate Donnelly desperately needs her new part-time job as a physical therapist. When she draws her old high school boyfriend as her first patient, she wonders if their short-lived romance will make her job more difficult.
Luke Marino, a former policeman, was wounded while serving in the army reserve in Iraq. Now a paraplegic, Luke wonders why God didn’t allow him to die. He can no longer be a soldier nor a policeman and feels he’s only half a man with no future. He refuses physical therapy until Mary Kate agrees to work with him at his home.
As Mary Kate puts Luke through his paces, she realizes she still has feelings for him. Can she keep things strictly business? And will Luke realize that he still has a fulfilling future ahead—and maybe even find romance?
A Soldier's Heart is the touching story of a wounded soldier who is angry and bitter over the hand he’s been dealt. Luke doesn’t see how he can support himself in a wheelchair and makes things difficult for his physical therapist.
Mary Kate is struggling to adjust to being a widow, raising her two children, and providing for them. She has a big extended family but is self-sufficient, even to the point of exhausting herself, and Luke’s crankiness doesn’t help.
It’s interesting to watch as these two duke it out in a battle of wills, which keeps the tension tight. Ms. Perry’s characters come alive with her realistic plot and interesting conflicts that keeps them on their toes.
A Soldier's Heart, the last book in Marta Perry’s series, The Flanagans, is a timely story. Readers of The Flanagans series will enjoy catching up on characters from the previous books and seeing how they all wind up in this final book, as well as how big sister, Mary Kate, puts aside her grief and finds a new love.
