Title: Smuggler’s Treasures (The Wall Series) Author: Robert Elmer Publisher: Zonderkidz ISBN: 0310709458 Genre: Inspirational/Juvenile/Historical/Fiction
Liesl Stumpff is thirteen and she’s happy with her life in West Berlin—all except for the part that Uncle Erich lives in East Berlin and she’s only allowed to visit him once every four months. And for that part that there seems to be some sort of family secret that no one will share with her.
Uncle Erich gives Leisl her great-grandmother’s Bible for a birthday present since he never uses it. Leisl is thankful for it, but more interested in getting access to history about her family for a school report. Unfortunately, it is next to impossible to dig up information—until Leisl stumbles across some mysterious letters hidden in the Bible. Will Leisl ever learn the whole story?
Smuggler's Treasure is the last book in The Wall series and it ties the series up neatly. Some of the characters we met in the first story are re-introduced in this last one. As an adult I would have liked to have been privy to some of the happenings, but for the younger readers the endings are good. My eleven year old enjoyed reading them along with me and even my teenagers were intrigued by them.
The Wall series is excellent for homeschoolers and those interested in World War II. The characters are interesting and well-developed. The faith message is expertly woven in and isn’t preachy. Smuggler's Treasure is not a book to be missed. $6.99. 158 pages.
