Keeping busy is the only thing that dulls the penetrating grief Sergeant Nathan Boone feels over the death of Lily, his young wife, and even hard work isn't all that effective. Nathan knew he never should have brought his refined wife to live at the rugged U.S. Army post, Camp Robinson on the Nebraska frontier. With the help of Lily's Negro mammy, Granny Max, Nathan is slowly coming to grips with his wife's death. Now, that he's found a crazy woman on the prairie and brought her to Granny Max, Nathan is busier than ever. Is it possible this wild woman can touch his heart and help him heal?

Laina Gray thought she was finally free from the life she hated as Riverboat Annie, but life on the prairie becomes an even worse nightmare when a vile, vicious man holds her captive. Rescued by the quiet Sergeant Boone, Laina finally finds peace and love with Granny Max. As she learns more about Granny's God, Laina struggles to put her horrid past behind her. When a man from her past shows up at Camp Robinson, Laina is devastated and certain everyone will soon know about her torrid history.

Caleb Jackson is hoping for a fresh start, and Army life is just the place to start over and escape a shotgun wedding. But his past follows quickly him. Drinking, gambling, and fighting constantly land him in the guardhouse. At least Sergeant Boone, a friend from his old life, has promised to keep quiet about Caleb's alias. When Caleb starts picnicking on Sundays with Laina and Granny, Nathan begins to cast him dark glares. Will the Sergeant keep quiet about Caleb's past life, even if Caleb moves in on Laina? And is it true that Granny's God can grant forgiveness to a man like him?

Secrets On The Wind, Book One in the Pine Ridge Portraits, brings to life a fascinating era of American history. In the late 1870s, all but a few renegade Cheyenne had been transferred to reservations in Oklahoma Territory. Camp Robinson was base to the soldiers who searched for the troublemakers left behind in Nebraska.

My heart ached for both Nathan and Laina. It was easy to grieve with kind Nathan over the loss of the woman he loved so dearly. I cheered for Laina as she fought her way back from the brink of insanity and shame. I didn't care much for Caleb at first, but he has a subtle way of growing on you. The only negative thing I can say about the book is that Laina's change came about almost too quickly, but then sometimes God does work miracles. Secrets On The Wind is a testimony of God's healing power and compassionate love.

Stephanie Grace Whitson is a masterful storyteller and pulled me into this enthralling historical story right from the start. This is the first book I've read by Ms. Whitson. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wondered why I haven't read this award-winning author before now. I wish I didn't have to wait for the second book in the Pine Ridge Portraits series to come out. I want to read it now. I highly recommend Secrets On The Wind. You won't be disappointed.
