Title: Scoop Author: Rene Gutteridge Publisher: WaterBrook Press ISBN: 1-4000-7157-7 Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary/Fiction
Hayden Hazard is afraid of clowns—not good when your family is in the clowning business. Still, she is devastated, when her parents die, and her oldest brother announces that he’s selling the family business. Clowning is all Hayden has known.
When Hayden lands a job as an assistant at Channel 7 news, she rocks the station on their heels. None of the employees have ever had such an outspoken Christian on staff before. Even the other Christians are uncomfortable around Hayden.
When the station goes through a crisis and the lead investigative reporter is attacked while on live-tv, then the lead anchor woman disappears, the producers are left with no choice but to put Hayden behind the anchor desk. After all, Hayden does have the right look. But does she have what it takes to report the news? And will the missing anchor woman show up?
Scoop is a funny, well-written story about an interesting group of newscasters in a studio that’s struggling for ratings and top news stories. Only thing is, they don’t want to be the news! Hayden is a realist character, excited about her faith. While making others uncomfortable, she still manages to draw them. The other characters are also well-developed and the plot is realistic.
I thoroughly enjoyed Scoop and recommend this book to everyone. I’m not going to say the faith message is expertly woven in, because the faith message is the loud, waving in your face type. Still, it doesn’t come off as preaching to the choir and while some Christians wish they were as outspoken as Hayden, they will realize that they can still let their lights sign before men in their own quiet way. $12.99. 352 pages. |
