Julia Wortham and her teenage daughter, Sarah, have been mothering the neighbor’s children since their mama died. The two youngest children even calls Julia Mama now. Julia teaches one of the neighbor children, Frankie, at home, because everyone feels he is too stupid to survive in public school. Julia disagrees.
When the neighbor’s teenage daughter, Rorey, starts seeing an older boy, Frankie tries to stop her. But what happens proves disastrous. Frankie is beat up and left barely walking. Although he refuses to talk about what happened, Sarah is convinced she knows who did it. When Rorey’s family’s barn starts on fire that night, it destroys their home, leaving the family homeless. What will they do? Could Rorey’s boyfriend have actually done these heinous deeds? If so, why? If not, who did and why?
Rorey’s Secret is set during depression days and shows the hardness of the times. The financial situation is better in this book than in the previous books in the series. Readers will want to read the first two books first, as Rorey’s Secret is a continuation of them.
Written alternating Julia’s and Sarah’s points of view, the readers gets insights into both women’s thoughts and feelings as the drama of one very nightmarish day unfolds. The reader will feel for them and may even find themselves praying for some of the characters! Ms. Kelly did an awesome job bringing her characters to life.
