Gerrit Appeldoorn really didn’t intend to propose to Joan Horton right after she set her kitchen on fire, but it turned out all right, because she said yes. Although Gerrit loved living in Van Dalen, he knew Joan longed for the city. When she had an opportunity to be department head at the Gaylord School of Music, in Chicago, how could he stand in her way? After all, like the Bible said, “Whither thou goest,” and all that. Gerrit knew his home was in Joan’s arms. So this retired farmer yanked up his roots and transplanted himself to the city. Transplants usually go through culture shock and Gerrit was no exception. Chicago probably wasn’t ready for Gerrit and Gerrit certainly wasn’t ready for Chicago.

I read this book in one afternoon and I fell in love…with Gerrit. He wore jeans and a cowboy hat in the elite school of music atmosphere. He was opinionated, could be sarcastic, and had a touch of the Pharisee. He got a lot of things wrong, but on the things that mattered he was rock solid. My kind of man.

The Recital  is a love story you won’t forget. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it ripped out my heart and stomped all over it. This is the first fiction I’ve read by Robert Elmer, but it won’t be the last. The guy can flat out write.
