Title: Rachel's Daughters: The Other Side of Christmas Author: Donna K. Swanson Publisher: iUniverse ISBN:0-595-13017-8 Genre: Biblical/Fiction
Rachel and her shepherd husband, Jacob, are expecting their first child. They befriend a weary young couple from Nazareth and their lives are changed forever. When Messiah is born, Rachel and Jacob rejoice with Mary and Joseph.
Soon, Rachel's own son, Barak, is born. She and her husband continue their friendship with the Holy Family. Her joy, however, is short-lived. Joseph and Mary flee for Egypt, and Roman soldiers rampage through Bethlehem. Rachel watches in horror as the soldiers murder Barak and thrust his lifeless body into her arms. Throughout Bethlehem the screams of grieving women fill the air.
Rachel's grief burrows deep into her soul, and she bitterly blames God. Why did He allow her baby to die while He took such pains to save His own Son? Rachel utterly rejects Him and forbids her husband to mention Him again.
But God is not through with Rachel. Her life takes many twists and turns as she begins a spiritual journey that will eventually bring her face-to-face with the Messiah.
Rachel's Daughters will sweep you into a vortex and give you a glimpse into the lives of those that lived in the times of Christ. Written in the style reminiscent of Marjorie Holmes' Two From Galilee, Donna Swanson's novel is a well-crafted and captivating story. | |
