Title: Queen Esther and the Second Graders of Doom Author: Allie Plieter Publisher: Steeple Hill Café ISBN: 0-373-78556-9 Genre: Inspirational/Chicklit
When Esther Walker and her husband, Doug, moves from New Jersey to the Bay area to help with Essie’s aging parents, she never expects to be hit with everything at one. A new home, her husband’s new, high-stress job, needy parents and a new baby. When her brother, Mark, the pastor of the church they attend, recruits Essie as a Sunday school teacher for 2nd grade boys, Essie wonders if she’s insane for ever moving across the country for – this.
The boys in the Sunday school class are absolute terrors, earning that class the nic-name “Doom Room” and they live up to their moniker. Essie is called constantly by parents complaining about things. Not to mention, but suddenly all her parents care is on her shoulders instead of being shared with her brother, her husband is never home, and Essie’s new baby never stops crying!
When Essie accidentally overhears a personal phone call, she feels there’s a reason she’s in California. But what to do with the information she overhears? She can’t exactly tell anyone. Then the one person who can help crosses Essie’s path. How can she get these two women together? And will she survive the stresses on her life long enough to do so—or will she head back to New Jersey as fast as she can go?
Queen Esther and the Second Graders of Doom is a truly cute chick lit. It is highly engaging, and as any mother of boys will recognize, also extremely accurate in the portrayal of eight-year-old males. I thoroughly enjoyed Queen Esther and the Second Graders of Doom. The characters are realistic and three-dimensional, the faith message is expertly woven in, and the story-line is brilliant. As a pastor’s wife, I also found the portrayal of certain church members true-to-life. I highly recommend Queen Esther and the Second Graders of Doom. Discussion questions are included at the back of the book, making this ideal for small group studies. $12.99. 282 pages.
