When Kathryn de Lindsay's father dies, he leaves her and their family estate at the mercy of the King of England, as well as the man she most despises, Rodney Carleton, an English nobleman-the very man who once betrayed her loving heart. Rodney swore he'd marry Kathryn someday, and now it seems he'll have his way. But Kathryn has a vital secret she is desperate to keep from Rodney, and she begs God to send her a champion to protect her. Kathryn is shocked when her prayer is answered in the form of possibly the only man she fears more than Rodney-the dreaded Black Bryan.

One of Scotland's fiercest warriors, Bryan Mackintosh, serves only his king, Robert the Bruce. Knowing how the king suffered when his family was captured, Bryan vows never to take a wife until Scotland is free. Now he has been thrown together with Kathryn, a feisty woman as determined to protect all that is hers as he is to see Scotland free. Bryan agrees to be Kathryn's protector, but unusual and unexpected orders from his king leaves Bryan struggling to obey for the first time in his life.

Scotland faces what could possibly be her final step to freedom from England. Though vastly out-numbered, the brave Scots will not run from this fight. When Kathryn realizes Bryan could die, she must decide what is most important to her. She's developed feelings for the ferocious, stoic knight,
but can she truly trust the man with everything she holds dear? Can Bryan, who's never opened up and trusted a woman, have faith that Kathryn and her God will not betray him?

The Price of Freedom is an awesome story set in 14th century Scotland, shortly after the tragic death of William Wallace. Carol Umberger creates such wonderful heroes and heroines that it's almost impossible to believe this is only her second novel. Bryan Mackintosh is to die for. A brave,
stoic knight not afraid to give his life for his country or his king. Throw in a stubborn heroine who needs his protection but bucks him every chance she gets, and you have a fabulous story that will hold you captive for hours.

The Price of Freedom is loaded with fascinating, historic detail that doesn't bog down the reader. Even the book's cover is awesome-one of the best I've ever seen. The ragged edges of the pages give the book an antique look, completing the atmosphere of something ancient. Circle of Honor, the first
book in The Scottish Crown Series, won RWAs 2001 Golden Heart Award, and I'm certain The Price of Freedom is sure to win awards, as well. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I highly recommend book two in The Scottish Crown Series, The Price of Freedom-an absolute must for your next book purchase.
