Inspirational/Romance Maddie Houser’s sister, Kate, talked Maddie into moving from her New York loft apartment to watch over Kate’s home in Kansas while it’s being renovated. After all, Maddie is an author, and she can write anywhere.
Living in chaos at Kate’s, Maddie finds it next to impossible to write. When the basement floods while under a tight deadline, it is the last straw. Calling her elderly neighbor, Ginny, for help, she is stunned when Ginny offers her a writing sanctuary at the bed and breakfast of Ginny’s friend, Arthur Tyler. Ginny tells Maddie that Arthur is thinking about retiring from teaching, but he hasn’t yet.
Beholden to the elderly gentleman for the use of his lovely home, Maddie starts leaving notes to thank him for the pleasure. To her surprise, Arthur responds to her notes and a friendship begins. Maddie tries her hand at matchmaking, thinking Ginny is in love with Arthur.
Even the writing sanctuary offers plenty of distractions for Maddie. She explores the house and helps with the housekeeping. When her proofreader quits without warning, Maddie is left wondering if she’ll meet deadline after all. Or will she find help—and love—in unexpected places?
Playing by Heart is a charming short story. I read it all in one sitting, and laughed so much during it. I sympathized a lot with Maddie as one can’t write just anywhere, but I don’t have the luxury of going to a bed and breakfast for solitude. Deb Raney has penned a cute story of love in Playing by Heart and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Deb Raney’s characters are so real, I feel I know them, and I could actually picture this charming bed and breakfast where she stayed. Playing by Heart is a must for every romance lover’s library. | |
