Fashion designer Raya Joseph believes it is time to break free from beige and embraces a sassy pink way of dressing. She also colors her afro white, thus setting her apart from the black women of the world. While riding the New York subway to work one day, Raya notices gorgeous trainer Flex Dunham.

Flex has vowed to steer clear of women, but something about Raya has him going in circles. He can’t keep his mind off her, and it is causing trouble at work and at home. When he needs to consult with her about some uniforms needed for a church team, he is certain he’s entered la-la land.

When Raya’s best friend Chenille suffers a still-birth, Raya is certain the world has gone mad, especially when Flex shows up just to hold her. And when Chenille decides to sponsor a boy who’s parents died from AIDS, it almost seems like AIDS is in the air. What is going happening to Raya’s well ordered life?

Pink is the first book in Marilynn Griffith’s Seasons of Style series. I think that Ms. Griffith’s writing style is an acquired taste. I didn’t care much for the first book of hers, Made of Honor, and I didn’t care much for Pink, although I did find it better than Made of Honor.

The story line is a bit confusing at times, but if you keep reading some of the little things begin to make sense. Not being African-American, I don’t understand many of the cultural things, so I think that affected my enjoyment of the story somewhat. Raya does seem a sassy, on-her-toes type character, and Flex is falling all over himself trying to be close to her.

If you like chick lit, you will want to experience Pink, especially if you’ve loved Marilynn Griffith’s other books. Discussion questions are included at the end. The second book in this series, Jade, is due out in June 2006. $12.99. 336 pages.
