Title: The Pattern of Her Heart Authors: Tracie Peterson and Judith Miller Publisher: Bethany House Publishers ISBN: 0-7642-2896-X Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Fiction
Jasmine and Nolan Houston are happy in their marriage and have two little girls added to their family now. Alice Ann is five years old and has miraculously recovered from a potentially fatal illness. While having a belated birthday party for their daughter, Jasmine receives a telegram stating that her father’s lawyer is coming to visit. Immediately, she fears the worst.
When the lawyer arrives, Jasmine’s worst nightmare appears to be coming true. She learns the horrible truth that her father, two brothers, and most of the extended family have died from Yellow Fever, leaving the family plantation to her and her other brother, McKinley. But McKinley wants nothing to do with it, so Jasmine is forced to uproot her family and move to Mississippi to settle the estate.
But the reception the family receives in Mississippi is anything but welcoming. Jasmine and Nolan are outspoken against slavery, and the other plantation owners do not appreciate their views. Can Jasmine free the slaves and settle the estate without risk from violent acts from their neighbors?
The Pattern of Her Heart is the third book in the Lights of Lowell series. I recommend reading the first two books in the series before The Pattern of Her Heart as the books are tied together and the reader would be lost without having the foundation laid first.
Jasmine is a strong, opinionated heroine, unusual in the historical time she lives in. I found Nolan a little weak in comparison with his wife. Some of the secondary characters are total sweethearts and I enjoyed having their stories woven in. The faith message is subtle and not intrusive.
As usual with Peterson’s and Miller’s books, the story writing is stellar and the reader has to keep turning pages to see what happens next. Pick up a copy of The Pattern of Her Heart today. You won’t be sorry. $12.99. 381 pages. |
