Chris Hackett is the owner and operator of Hack’s Golf Learning Center. On a routine day teaching golf, one of his students mentions a class she’s heard of to learn about what the other sex is thinking. Since Chris is single, he figures it might be a good idea, so he goes to class. There he discovers that he’s the only male in it, and the teacher is a radical feminist who believes all of women’s problems were caused by Adam.
Chris is upset by this and challenges the teacher to a golf bet, where if he won, he’d get equal teaching time. However, his next student, Molly, is highly upset by his betting and leaves the teaching center in a bit of a huff. Fortunately, she returns with some ideas for “politicalizing” Chris’s business, since it is an election year. Soon, Chris’s golf range is the talk of the town…but someone is taking the political insults too seriously…
Par for the Course is the best book I’ve read so far by Ray Blackston. This book shines, and you can tell that the subject matter is something the author is passionate about. I totally loved Chris and Molly and laughed out loud several times in the story. Mixed in with the humor was a tiny bit of suspense, so it was fun trying to decide who might be threatening Chris.
Fans of any sort of lit will love Par for the Course. It includes a humorous glossary of golf terms in the back of the book (which would have been helpful to know before I finished the story!), and a reader’s guide with discussion questions. $13.99. 251 pages.
