Title: Oxygen Genre: Inspirational/Science Fiction
The first scene in Oxygen , the science fiction novel by John Olson and Randall Ingermanson, begins in the year 2012 when Valkerie Jansen, fights for one more breath of oxygen in her struggle against a volcano venting sulfur dioxide. This suspenseful start reflects every chapter of the entire book. Valkerie is a microbial ecologist searching for life in impossible places, and she is important to NASA's mission to Mars for that reason. As an ASCAN (Astronaut Candidate), she must pass all of the strenuous physical tests and show that she is a team player, which is difficult because she is a Christian and scientist in a world filled with those who would ridicule followers of Christ, including Bob Kaganovski, the flight engineer. Concern for the crew and the mission begins to brew when the FBI discovers there may be a sabotage attempt. Despite security concerns the mission is a go. The future of NASA is at stake, everything riding on a successful trip to Mars. Once the four-member crew is in space, relief is only short-lived as mistrust between crewmembers begins to grow. Then, an explosion only serves to deepen suspicions. In an environment where teamwork is essential to sustain life, the crewmembers are left trusting no one. At each turn, the stakes rise even higher until there is only enough oxygen left for two. The decision must be made. Who will live? And who will die? The reader will be stunned with the outcome, surprised and propelled forward at the end of every chapter, and will release a sigh of satisfaction at the perfect ending of Oxygen. |
