Max Jordan, “Dr. Botox” to Chicago society, was more than geographically distanced from his son, Joshua. Embittered by Joshua’s decision to waste his medical talents and future in Haiti, they were also separated by their beliefs.

Joshua Jordan was leaving his mark on the children of Haiti, and on the heart of one young woman who worked at his side, Samantha. Together, through their faith and expertise, they toiled against impossible odds to bring basic health care to one of the poorest places on earth. With not enough of him to go around, Joshua worked long hours, concerned more for the children and not enough for himself. When he fell ill, he simply didn’t have the strength to get well.

After Joshua’s death, Max resolved that the only way he could find closure was to go to the place that had captured the heart of his foolish son. He landed in Haiti full of skepticism and bitterness.

Valerie Austin was landing in Haiti at the same time. Her wedding plans had been cancelled, she felt a pull to do something for children, and she had a honeymoon plane ticket that she’d just as soon use for something good. More than anything else in the world, Valerie wanted children. Now, without a wedding, that dream was looking more unlikely than ever.

Once again, Deborah Raney sneaks these well-drawn characters into our hearts. In addition to Max and Valerie, we see people who have dedicated their lives to helping others in desperate situations.  Who have sacrificed much to gain much, and whose spirits touch ours simply by sharing this earth with them. Over the Waters is an uplifting and eye-opening read (Botox puns not intended), and one well worth your time. $12.95. 327 pages not including discussion questions.
