Frank McRae has gone through war. World War II, to be exact. And now, he’s bitter and hateful of all things Asian. When Frank’s son, Mike, enlists, Frank takes it pretty well, but he’s worried about the things his son will experience when he is shipped to Viet Nam.

Maggie McRae is dying of cancer. She’s giving surviving her best shot, but her daughter, Julie, a nurse, is honest enough to tell her there’s little hope. The chemo and radiation treatments sometimes seem worse than the disease itself. But she’s determined to hold it together for the sake of her husband, her daughter, and her son.

When Mike writes home to tell them that’s he’s met a girl and has gotten married, the family is divided. Maggie is thrilled about the prospect of a new daughter, but Frank is upset that his new daughter-in-law is Asian—and a Buddhist. Can Frank possibly find it in him to accept his son’s wife?

One Holy Night is extremely well-written. I’d read Ms. Hochstetler’s two historicals, and loved them, so I was looking forward to reading One Holy Night when it crossed my desk. And true to form, I loved the story. It made me cry, so when you read it, be sure to keep a box of tissues close by.

All the characters in this book are realistic, and made me care for them, even if they are secondary characters. The faith message is an important part of this story, but even so, it isn’t preachy. One Holy Night has an ending that will keep the reader thinking. Truly a great book. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $12.99. 257 pages.
