Title: The Oak Leaves Author: Maureen Lang Publisher: Tyndale ISBN 1-4143-1345-0 Genre: Inspirational/Fiction
Talie Ingram’s life takes a drastic turn when she discovers a nineteenth century journal written by her ancestor, Cosima Escott. Talie had been concerned by Ben, her infant son’s, slow development. In the pages of Cosima’s journal, she discovers a family secret that will alter her life forever.
I had never heard of fragile X syndrome. Maureen Lang does a wonderful job of showing the results of this medical condition. She speaks from experience since her own son is “low functioning” on the fragile X scale. This is a marvelous story of fear and doubt, love and compassion. Like Maureen, her characters struggle with the diagnosis, and strive to understand how a loving God could allow something like this to happen. I’ve read Maureen’s historical fiction and loved it, but this book touched my heart. I strongly recommend it. It’s a book you’ll remember.
