Title: Night Song Author: Tricia Goyer Publisher: Moody Publishers ISBN: 0-8024-1555-5 Genre: Inspirational/Historical Fiction
Twelve-year-old Jakub Hanauer’s game of hide-and-seek with his younger brother is interrupted when German soldiers come into their father’s violin shop and take him away. Desperate to save his father, ten-year-old Daniel races after the soldiers, ignoring Jakub’s cries to stop. The soldiers beat Daniel—resulting in a tragedy that causes unforeseen events . . . .
Nick Fletcher knows Evie is the girl for him—and he plans on asking her to marry him. But before he can carry out his romantic plans, Evie’s father interrupts their date to tell them that the family is under orders to return to Austria immediately. Nick’s plans will have to wait. Desperate to at least be in the same nation as Evie, Nick jumps at the chance to join the war effort—as a surgeon. Then the news comes that Evie has been killed by a German soldier. Devastated, Nick struggles to get beyond Evie—but can’t bring himself to stop writing her, even if she’ll never read his letters. Will Nick ever find true love again?
Night Song held my interest from page one. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. While portions of the book were hard to read, it represented how life was during World War II when Hilter tried to control the world. I think it would be a good book for older homeschooled children to read when they study World War II to get an idea—beyond a textbook—what happened in Europe.
Tricia Goyer’s book is endorsed by several veterans and survivors of WWII. The characters are so realistically developed that I hated to see the tragedy touch their lives. I could almost picture my own twelve-year-old struggling to understand what was happening to his world and trying to adjust to the changes.
Night Song is definitely a book for the keeper shelf. Readers will be able to identify with the characters and can almost see (and smell) the surroundings. Pick up Night Song today for a read you won’t soon forget. I can’t wait for another Tricia Goyer novel.
