Rory O’Leary and his younger brother, Colm, are sent away when his mother fears she is dying. She sends him to live with her rich sister, Jane, hoping that Jane will care for the boys. But Jane never loved the boys and Colm turns to alcohol to drown his pain. Rory leaves her home as soon as he is able.

Too soon, Rory is called back to attend the wedding of his cousin, William. Rory doesn’t want to go, but he is forced. There he meets a beautiful peasant girl, Shannon, in the rose garden.

Shannon and her twin sister, Ainslee are sent away from home, and told to emigrate to America. Shannon reluctantly agrees, but fears she’ll never see the handsome Rory again. Fate changes when Rory rescues Shannon and Ainslee at the squalid docks of County Cork. Is there hope for Rory and Shannon to have a future?

Never Broken is a fascinating historical saga set in historical Ireland. Both Shannon and Rory are interesting characters. I liked the story, though I feel some of the events were contrived.

Overall, I think Never Broken is a good story to read if you love Irish characters and historical events. $6.99. 352 pages.
