Title: Nazareth's Song Author: Patricia Hickman Publisher: Warner Faith ISBN: 0-446-69233-6 Genre: Inspirational/Women/Fiction
The town of Nazareth, Arkansas, is finally beginning to feel like home to Jeb Nubey and the three Welby children he cares for. But the Great Depression is in full swing, and since the pastor he works with is ill, Jeb finds himself stepping behind the pulpit to lead the hurting community.
When some of the starving inhabitants of the town start a small war, Jeb is the one who steps in to make things right, restoring peace to the hurting community and helping the town’s wealthy banker. But his oldest charge, Angel, is becoming increasingly difficult and Jeb is at a loss how to control her unruly ways.
Convinced Angel and her siblings need a mother, Jeb starts looking around. But the only woman he’s ever loved, Fern, the school teacher, barely gives him the time of day. When the banker’s daughter, Winona, comes to town, she is openly interested in Jeb. But will Winona be able to win Jeb’s heart? Or will he continue struggling to win the aloof Fern?
The second book in the Millwood Hollow Series, Nazareth's Song easily stands alone, but readers might want to pick up Fallen Angels to read first as there are a few references back to prior events. I found Jeb a totally loveable hero, struggling with his past and his wants and desires, and those of his community. A true pastor at heart, he reaches out to those less fortunate, even when it means his own family goes without. However, I didn’t see what Jeb liked in Fern. She seemed stiff and unfriendly to me. Winona, on the other hand, was an interesting friendly character.
It was interesting to read about some of the events of the Great Depression. I remember hearing some of the stories from my older relatives who lived through it, but this gave a different flair to the stories I’d heard. Set in rural Arkansas, the characters have a distinctive southern feel. It made me hungry for beans and cornbread.
Pick up Nazareth's Song by renowned story teller, Patricia Hickman, today. You won’t be sorry you did. There are discussion questions at the end, making this book perfect for your book club selection. |
