Title: Bitsy and the Mystery At Tybee Island Author: Vonda Skelton Publisher: The Overmountain Press ISBN: 1-570-72254-4 (paperback) 1-570-72253-6 (hardback) Genre: Inspirational/Children/Fiction
Elizabeth Ruth Burroughs (Bitsy) is twelve years old and tired of being treated like a child. Her mother complains about the lack of money, but that doesn’t stop her and Daddy from having a fourth child. Wasn’t three children enough? Especially since Bitsy has to share a room with her little sisters!
When her father announces they are going on vacation to Tybee Island, her mother puts up a fuss. Like always, they can’t afford it. Then they learn that their dad has earned a hundred dollar bonus and they can get the cabin on Tybee Island for only twenty dollars. Bitsy talks her mother into allowing her cousin, Matt, to go along so she’ll have someone to talk to—someone other than her bratty little sisters. Her parents agree, much to Bitsy’s delight.
When they arrive on Tybee Island, they discover their cabin is right next door to an abandoned fort. Bitsy and Matt are thrilled until someone warns them to stay away from the fort. Is there a valuable treasure hidden inside? Or is someone afraid that the kids will discover more than a buried treasure?
Bitsy is a realistic teenager, thinking only of herself and not understanding why anyone else acts the way they do. She is a very determined girl, used to getting her own way and doing whatever it takes to get it. On the other hand, I thought Matt’s character was a bit underdeveloped. He freezes whenever anything happens or runs away, leaving Bitsy to deal with all the fallout. It is a very cute story, one that preteen and teen girls will be sure to enjoy. There is a faith message woven throughout the book, teaching Matt and Bitsy that things aren’t always as they seem.
Bitsy and the Mystery At Tybee Island is a bit slow starting, but once they get to Tybee Island, the story starts heating up and it turns into a page turner. It is an excellent cozy mystery for girls. Available now. Hardback: $23.95 Paperback $13.95, 120 pages. |
