Genre: Inspirational/Children/Fiction

Twelve-year-old Bitsy Burroughs is beginning to learn some Bible verses, and she is determined to turn over a new leaf, and become more like what she’s learning in Sunday school. But it doesn’t take long for Bitsy to revert back to her old self when she goes to visit her friend, Ellie on Amelia Island. When taunted by a neighborhood bully, Bitsy is quick to get in his face and a fist fight occurs. Not good when Bitsy is supposed to be singing in a talent show in a few days and now she’s all bruised and an eye is swollen shut.

Bitsy needs to earn money to go to camp so she starts her own jewelry business. She’s also trying to help her friend’s mom prepare for an auction next door to earn money for a community project. But the house next door appears to be haunted, and boxes of stuff to be auctioned off are mysteriously disappearing! Bitsy and her friends are determined to find out what is happening and why. Are the ghosts real or is someone behind the ghostly appearances?

Bitsy & The Mystery At Amelia Island is the second book in the Bitsy Burroughs Adventures series that I’ve read, but it easily stands alone. I also think that this book is better than the other one. I instantly related to Bitsy and identified with her as she struggled to find her place in a new community. Bitsy was real, and I cheered her on as she tried to make money for camp and yet discover what was behind the ghosts and hauntings.

I highly recommend Bitsy & The Mystery At Amelia Island for a great adventure book for girls (and boys) ages eight- through twelve-years-old. My ten-year-old daughter loved it and I did too. There isn’t much of a faith message though, other than mentioning learning Bible verses and attending activities for children. Pick up a copy of Bitsy & The Mystery At Amelia Island for a story that won’t disappoint. $8.95. 183 pages.
