Title: Mysterious Ways Author: Terry Burns Publisher: River Oak ISBN: 1-589-19027-0 Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Fiction Amos Taylor thinks he’s found the perfect disguise, a way to hide in plain sight. He steals a parson’s clothing hanging on the line and proceeds to rob a stagecoach. Leaving the travelers stranded, Amos steals the stagecoach and rides off a short distance before burying his loot and his clothes and changing into the parson’s outfit. He rides back and “rescues” the travelers, going into town with them, and then riding back with the sheriff to hunt for the bandits. When the sheriff’s tracker becomes convinced he’s hunting a ghost, Amos knows he’s stumbled upon a gold mine, especially when the rest of the town folk become convinced he’s truly a circuit riding preacher. One old blind man is not so easily fooled, but nevertheless, he doesn’t do anything to stop Amos from fooling the townsfolk; instead he writes out sermons for Amos and allows Amos to use them as his own. Amos continues his life of crime, visiting different cities and robbing people in truly ingenious schemes, then riding back into town, posing as the preacher. But sooner or later your sins will find you out. What will happen to Amos when he’s discovered? Mysterious Ways is truly a creative read. I have to say that most of the events in the book were contrived and unrealistic. However, they were not by any means, unimaginative. Mr. Burns truly has a dizzying creative mind. Even though Amos was ‘the bad guy,’ I grew to care for him and was amused by his unusual schemes, even though they were wrong. Mr. Burns has an unique voice and I enjoyed reading his style of writing. I look forward to reading many more books by him. His characters become real, with voices and thoughts like us. I couldn’t put Mysterious Ways down and highly recommend it. A reader’s guide is included for personal or group studies. $12.99. 315 pages.
