Title: Murder By Mushroom Author: Virginia Smith Publisher: Love Inspired Suspense ISBN: 978-0-373-44253-4 Genre: Inspirational/Cozy/Mystery
Jackie Hoffner is out to prove that she can cook. After a few too many snide remarks about Jackie always bring potato chips to the church potluck, Jackie copies a recipe from the internet and makes a pasta and mushroom delight which is hugely popular among the older members of the church. In fact, the little bit left over was divided up and sent home with a few senior citizens.
When Alice Farmer turns up dead, the blame is quickly placed on Jackie’s creation. The mushrooms were poisoned. Jackie is certain that she wasn’t the blame, after all many other people ate her casserole and none of them died, but the police are treating her as a suspect and even her cooking utensils are taken in for testing.
To prove her innocence, Jackie decides to take a week off work and start questioning the people in the church. The police urge her to stay out of their business, but handsome Trooper Dennis Walsh can’t seem to stay away. Will Jackie find the real culprit before the murderous poisoner strikes again?
Murder By Mushroom is one of those fun, quirky books that I love to read. It is a flowing read that almost has a bouncy personality—if a book can have a personality. Alice reminds me of an elderly aunt I have that no one seems to please, and Jackie is struggling to fit into a new congregation, and is hesitant and shy at first, but as she sets out to clear her name she becomes more forceful.
I thoroughly enjoyed Murder By Mushroom and hope to read many more books by this extremely talented author. I didn’t want this book to end. And I thoroughly enjoyed the plot…you will never look at church potlucks the same again. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $5.50. 250 pages.
