Hannah Bartlett has finally discovered the way to be cool with the younger generation. She became a ‘soccer mom’ and she was unanimously voted in as snack coordinator during an iced tea-induced trip to the bathroom. Buying bags of corn chips in bulk at the local discount store became the answer, and her nine-year-old foster son, Sam, and his friends started calling her Nacho Mama.
That name opened up a whole window of opportunity for Hannah. Her funny e-mails home to her sisters were published when her sister Sadie decided the whole community would love to know what happened in Hannah’s life. When Hannah finds herself the interior decorator of the church nursery and her pediatrician doctor husband asks her to start cleaning his office--for free--Hannah wonders what would happen if she packed her bags and ran away from all the responsibilities—especially when the church nursery redecorating turns into a nightmare of outlandish proportions. Will Hannah succumb to the temptation to flee? Or will she learn to say ‘no?’
As a mother of five and a pastor’s wife, I could relate to the busyness of Hannah’s life. Sometimes, in reading this book, it seemed as if Annie Jones had been spying on my home life as I read about the kid-induced disasters and the husband who takes advantage of his wife’s ‘stay-at-home-mom’ status. I laughed out loud at many parts of Mom Over Miami.
Annie Jones has a gift of making her characters come to life. I came to care deeply for Hannah. I didn’t get quite the grasp of her husband, Payt, but since the story is written from Hannah’s point of view, I really didn’t feel anything was lacking. I am putting Mom Over Miami on my keeper shelf as I know I will want to read this book again. $12.95. 304 pages. | |
