Title: Michigan (four full-length novels in one) Author: Gail Gaymer Martin Publisher: Barbour Books ISBN: 1-59310-434-0 Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary Romance
In four diverse Michigan locations, four couples must answer the same question: Will they allow God to work in their lives?
Out on a Limb – Karen Chapman’s favorite place to sing is perched high in the branches of an apple tree. When Eric Kendall discovers her, he is immediately captivated by the human song bird. But their grandfathers have a long-time feud between them, and any hope of Karen and Eric settling it is next to impossible. When Karen discovers Eric is between jobs she is a bit put off, thinking he is lazy. But her own job situation is equally unstable. Will family feuds and career changes end the relationship before it can start?
Over Her Head – Lana West is stunned when her sister, Barb, announces she’s brought home a man. Barb says he held a sign, “Will work for food”, and she wants to do her good deed for the day. Mark Branson is the new youth pastor in town, and he’s amused by the mix-up, but since Barb took him where he wanted to go, he figured he might as well do the work. Lana is embarrassed when she discovers the truth, but she and Mark strike up a friendship. A high school teacher, Lana gets enough of teens during the school year so she is a bit upset when Mark pushes her to help with the teens during the summer too. Will she stand up to him and say no? Or will her fond feelings for Mark force her outside her comfort zone?
Seasons – Sally Newgate is struggling to recover from her husband’s premature death. Hoping for some comfort, she decides to join a group for bereaved partners, where she meets Brad Matthews. Brad is also recovering from the loss of his wife, but he is captivated by the friendly, outgoing Sally, and thinks she’ll be a fantastic mother for his children. Unfortunately, his children don’t share his high opinion of Sally. Will he and Sally be able to win them over? Or will they go their separate ways?
Secrets Within– Laine Sibley takes in an orphaned niece, in spite of the hardship that this causes her. Jeff Rice reaches out to befriend Laine and her niece but is surprised when he discovers that mystery seems to enshroud her. Will Jeff be able to help when he discovers someone is making threats on Laine’s life?
I enjoyed reading Michigan and revisiting several of the places in the state that I grew to love when I lived there. My favorite story in this collection of full-length novels is Out on a Limb but maybe that is because it’s the only one I hadn’t read previously.
Three of the stories in Michigan were previously published with Heartsong Presents, Out on a Limb is the only new story in the collection. The characters in each story are well developed, and I enjoyed several laugh-out-loud moments as the heroes and heroines were forced outside their comfort zones and into situations where they didn’t quite know how to handle themselves.
Pick up Michigan today and discover why The Great Lake State is a fantastic place to visit, call home, or read about.
