Matchstick is sure to spark some interesting thoughts in the minds of young adult readers! This contemporary novel vividly portrays the issues of courage and faith in the life of sixth-grader, Larry, “Matchstick”, Taylor. His family recently moved to Amos Landing, where he is struggling to be accepted at a new school. In an attempt to enter into the spirit of the occasion, Larry volunteers to sing the solo for the Christmas program. Little did he realize that this would make him a target for the bullies and the object of a civil liberties battle.

The world of sixth-graders is well described with appropriate dialogue and characterization. Readers will be able to feel Larry’s fear and apprehension as he enrolls in a new school. He hopes to meet a friend, but doesn’t get off to a promising start. His home life is also affecting him, with the tension mounting between his parents, who recently declared bankruptcy. It was touching when Larry volunteers for the Christmas program, almost like his last call for acceptance.

The author has a nice touch with words. Although the overall theme was of a serious nature, there was a good mixture of humor and some lighthearted fun. The school setting is one in which the young adult audience can readily identify. By agreeing to sing the solo, Larry becomes the target for the school bullies, yet the author was able to take an evenhanded approach to this.

The story climaxes with the Christmas program. Because the song chosen for the solo had a religious nature, a civil liberties organization threatens to sue the school. Readers will follow the progression of ideas to actions in the characters. The young adult audience will see that “bullies” aren’t always on the school playground. Adults must also stand firm in their beliefs, regardless of opposition.

As Larry confronts his fears with the help of his faith, young readers will be encouraged in their own lives. Everyone, at some time or another, will be faced with a difficult choice. Yet, the answer is simple: do the right thing. Through the grace of God, believers have the power to do just that. This is an excellent message to give young adults.

Matchstick enlightens and inspires!
