Title: The Martyr's Song

Author: Ted Dekker

Publisher: WestBow Press

ISBN: 0-8499-4499-6

Genre: Inspirational/Suspense

An old woman approaches Marci in the school building and promises that if Marci gives her an hour of her time, she will make Marci beautiful—not just inner beauty, but outward beauty, to save her from being a social outcast among her friends at school. Marci is skeptical, but she agrees to let the woman try. And in that hour, the woman tells Marci a story about the 1940s and war-torn Bosnia.

There are five soldiers descending a hill, and they spy a village untouched by war. The church steeple reaches to the sky, in a land where most all other churches have been destroyed. The soldiers come down the hill intending to terrorize the town folk and brutalize the priest. But somehow, in the midst of the horror, there is singing. An unexpected beauty. And a vision. Somehow all that will change . . . everything.

I picked up The Martyr's Song, thinking it’d be a quick story, easily read, and discarded. I was wrong. The Martyr's Song has a message that everyone needs to hear. I found myself in the story—as the mysterious old woman promises Marci—and maybe, somehow, I’ll come out the better for it.

The Martyr's Song will be a good book for church libraries, Christian school libraries, etc. I recommend this book, which is small, even to send to soldiers serving now. The book is life-changing and the message should be heard. I’m going to have my children read this book during part of our school year. The book will come in hardcover with a CD single including an original song by Todd Agnew, which was written exclusively for this book. $16.99. 160 pages.
