Lady Beatrice Marlowe is the daughter of a Saxon squire. When she is sixteen years old, she meets and falls in love with the new groom, Philip de Tollard. Being who she is, Beatrice is forbidden to marry Philip, and is forced into a marriage of convenience to someone her father chooses for her.
Philip is really the son of a powerful English lord, but being Illegitimate, he is not allowed any of the rights and privileges associated with the position. When his father is murdered, Philip’s step-brother, Gareth, blames the murder on Philip and he is forced from the area. Philip goes to England and finds himself there in time for the Crusades.
Time passes, while Philip plots to get revenge on his step-brother. But then he finds himself reunited with Beatrice under fantastic circumstances. Will their love have lasted through the years apart?
Mark of the Cross is an engaging read set in the thirteen century. Lady Beatrice has to obey her father and marry whom he chooses, but even so, her independence is shown even as she obeys. I hoped things would work out for Philip and Beatrice.
I felt for Philip as he is forced from his home and has to flee for his life when his father is murdered. Naturally, he is hurt and embittered, and I hoped he’d be able to prove his innocence. The whole book is well-written and held my interest until the end. While I didn’t find this book easily read, I did enjoy it. $13.99. 448 pages. |
