Title: A Light To My Path Author: Lynn Austin Publisher: Bethany House Publishers ISBN: 1-55661-444-6 Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Women/Fiction
Kitty has been a house slave for as long as she can remember. Ever since she and Missy Claire were children, she kept Missy amused and took care of her needs. But now Kitty is faced with a decision. The Yankees are coming. Should she take a chance and run for freedom with the rest of the slaves? Or should she obey the bidding of her mistress and follow them to a new home where she’d continue to be a slave?
Grady is torn from his mother at an early age and sold to many different masters before he finally lands on a plantation where the master is kind. From the moment he meets Kitty he is fascinated by the quiet, sweet-spirited woman, but can’t understand why she doesn’t hate the white people as much as he does. When a chance at freedom comes, will he embrace it, even though it might mean losing the woman he loves?
The choices Kitty and Grady make will mark their decisions for the rest of their lives. Will Grady ever get past his consuming hatred for the white people? Will freedom be everything he and Kitty dream it will be?
Even though A Light To My Path is book three in the Refiner’s Fire series, it easily stands alone. I was instantly caught up in Kitty and Grady’s lives and hurt for them when things weren’t wonderful. I think the history of the era was—for the most part—accurately portrayed in A Light To My Path, though I am unsure how accurate the ending of the book is, but it’s happy, so I have no complaints.
Readers of historical fiction will love A Light To My Path and want to keep this book—or give as a gift—to other readers. Lynn Austin has penned another winner. Pick up A Light To My Path today for a satisfying read.
