Title: Letter Perfect Author: Cathy Marie Hake Publisher: Bethany House August 2006 ISBN: 0-7642-0165-3 Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Fiction
Ruth Caldwell is too awkward and has just been kicked out of yet another finishing school for ladies. It’s a miracle she lasted there six months. Ruth goes home to her loving mother, only to find Mother on her deathbed. Her dying wish is that Ruth travel west to California to live with her father—a man she’s never known.
Josh McCain is shocked when he gets a letter saying he has a daughter he’s never met. After all, he’s only twenty-four and this ‘daughter’ is nineteen. Then he figures out that the letter was meant for the former owner of the ranch, a man long deceased. He promptly sends word to tell Ms. Caldwell not to come, but unfortunately, she arrives before his letter reaches her.
Josh soon discovers that Ruth is not meant for ranch life. She’s dangerous and bumbling and accidents are occurring more often than usual with her around. But soon, Ruth’s accidents seem to take a sinister turn. Where will Josh’s loyalties lie?
Letter Perfect is the first book I’ve had the privilege of reading by Ms. Hake and I hope that it isn’t the last. Josh is a loveable hero, even when he’s upset, and Ruth is an endearing heroine. The faith message is expertly woven in. My interest was quickly won, and I couldn’t put this book down. I liked the element of suspense that was lightly woven in.
More than your traditional historical romance, Letter Perfect is an incredible read by a gifted author. Tidbits of history are shared in the story about the pony express which made it especially interesting. I highly recommend Letter Perfect. $13.99. 379 pages. |
